Name Origin:
Laker was the name of
a type of cargo ship used on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi river.
The name was selected when the franchise was located in Minneapolis.

In the 1947/48 season: Minneapolis Lakers (NBL)
In the 1948/49 season: Minneapolis Lakers (BAA)
from the 1949/50 season to the 1959/60 season: Minneapolis Lakers (NBA)
from the 1960/61 season to the present Los Angeles Lakers (NBA)
NBA Titles:
- 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954,
1972, 1980,
1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2009.
- 15 championships and 30 conference titles.
- Los Angeles Lakers participated in 30 of the 63 NBA finals
and is the second franchise with more titles won.
* Note: being the BAA the origin of the NBA, its championships are officially considered
NBA championships.
The Lakers won the 1948/49 title in the final BAA season.
